Trip to Gokarna, Murudeshwar and Kollur
Posted by Bala on May 16, 2007
This trip with my cousin and his friends was planned a month ago. Initially we decided to go for Gokarna and Goa (if possible). But due to some problems we decided not to go for Goa, as Goa is not a place to be seen in a single day. We started bit late on Friday night, and reached Gokarna in the morning around 10:00. Gokarna beach is a really nice place to visit. It has 4 beaches, and we visited Om Beach. Om Beach is really nice. I never seen a ocean standing on a high hill. It was such good sight seeing. We played in the beach sand and enjoyed the time over there. From there we started around 05:00 to Murudeshwar and reached there by 09:00, we took a cottage near to Beach and it was amazing view of the sea. The sea on three sides surrounds the temple towering on the small hill called Kanduka Giri. Recently a Lord Shiva idol erected beside the temple. The idol towers 123 feet into the sky and is the tallest Shiva idol in the world. We went for a boating inside the sea. In the half way mid, the boat’s motor got switched off and we started shouting, every one get down and start pushing the boat
From there we started to Kollur Mookambika temple. From there we started to Bangalore and reached by morning 05:00. Overall its a nice trip.

Hi Subramani,
We visited Gokarna during May. The climate was good for visiting that time. We didnt stayed in the cottage near the Gokarna beach. We stayed in houses near Murudeshwar beach. You have to bargain for the rent. It will be like our regular houses (but newly constructed and neatly maintained houses). We gave around 400 per day for group 10. If go near the temple itself there will be lot ppl calling for renting such houses.

I have been to Murudeshwar on this July. Its a nice place to relax. I started from Bangalore and took Bangalore-TUMKUR-Shimoga-Sagar-Jogfalls-Murudeshwar route. Jog was fully coverd with fog so we havnt got the perfect view. We stayed in RNS residency which cost 1700 per night. Dont go with a mind to see so many things in Murudeshwar .. its place to take a break from busy life. I stayed most of the time in the room only enjoying the ultimate view of the sea from the room. Then went for a ayurvedic massage, enjoyed the swimming pool atlast went to the Shiva statue and temple took few photographs and came back. Road is good except the strech from Sagar to hannavaar. Overall a nice trip

Places covered: Horanadu, Kalasa, Sringeri, Kollur, Gokarna, Murudeshwar, Maravanthe, Udupi, Karkala, Moodbidri, Kateel, Mangalore, Dharmasthala, Kukke Subramanya in this order from Bangalore
14 Places Covered in 6 days, By Road in 1500 kms
Distances, Route, Road conditions:
1. Day1: 26th April
Bangalore – Kalasa – 315 kms (Bangalore – Belur – Hassan – Mudigere – Kottigehara – Kalasa). Bangalore to Belur is NH48. Excellent road. However watch out for diversions as 4 laning is going on. Donot speed above 90 kmph, as one can except vehicles comming up suddenly. We saw a fatal accident, head-on collison between a bus and a Santro. There are 2 routes from Belur to Kottigehara. From the petrol bunk in Belur, there are 2 lefts that lead to Kottigehara. Take the immediate left (has a bad road stretch of around 5 to 6 kms). The other goeas via gonibeedu has a bad road stretch of 25 kms. Road is narrow but good and scenic from Kottigehara to Horanadu. We started in Bangalore at 6.30AM, took us 7 hrs to reach Horanadu which includes 1/2 hr tea break in Hassan, and 45 min temple visit at Kalasa.
Kalasa – Horanadu – 8 kms
Horanadu – Sringeri – 65 kms – Road is very narrow till Jayapura but good and scenic. Jayapura to Sringeri is very good
Halt at Sringeri
2. Day2: 27th April
Sringeri – Kollur – 110 kms (Sringeri – Agumbe(25) – Goliangadi(30) – Haladi(8) – Vandse(23) – Kollur(24)). Road is good.
Kollur – Gokarna – 135 kms (Kollur – Baindur(26) – Murudeshwara(28) – Honnavar(30) – Gokarna(50) ) – Road is narrow till Baindur. From Baindur one has to take ‘right’ to hit NH48. From Baindur it is a straight road(NH17) till Gokarna. There is a 6 kms bad stretch between Baindur and Murudeshwar. Road work is going on, and this bad stretch should be repaired in the next one or 2 months. Rest of NH17 is fabulous to drive.
Halt at Gokarna
3. Day3: 28th April
Gokarna – Murudeshwar – 80 kms on NH17 straight and excellent road
Murudeshwar – Maravanthe – 50 kms on NH17 straight and excellent road except for the 6 kms bad stretch
Maravanthe – Udupi – 50 kms on NH17 straight and excellent road
Halt at Udupi
4. Day4: 29th April
Udupi – Karkala – 40 kms. Good raod
Karkala – Moodbidri – 20 kms. Good raod
Moodbidri – Kateel – 25 kms. Good raod
Kateel – Mangalore – 25 kms. Good raod
Halts in Mangalore.
5. Day5: 30th April
Mangalore – Kukke – 100 kms (Mangalore – Patil – BC Road(20) – Uppinangadi(30) – Kukke(50)). Road is good
Kukke – Dharmasthala – 50 kms (Kukke – Mardala(17) – Nelyady – Dharmasthala). There are 2 routes from Kukke to Dharmasthala. We took the Nelyady route which is supposedly 10 kms shorter than the other route. Road is good mostly except for a few bad patches and some part of the road is very narrow.
Halt at Dharmasthala
6. Day6: 1st May
Dharmasthala – Bangalore – 315 Kms (Dharmasthala – Ujre(8) – Charmadi ghat – Kothigehara(40) – Mudigere(15) – Belur(30) – Hassan(35) – Kunigal(112) – Nelamangala(43) – Bangalore-Vidhansoudha(32)). Dharmasthala to Ujre is good. 40 kms of Charmadi ghat from Ujre till Kottigehra is mostly good except for a few bad patches and potholes. Kottigehara to Belur is ok except for the bad stretch I mentioned above. Belur to Bangalore is NH48, excellent.
